Door Hardware: The Finishing Touch That Ties It All Together
Selecting the right door hardware is one of those small details that makes a big difference. From the front door to the linen closet, handles, knobs, and locks help define the look, function, and feel of your home. Whether you're drawn to a sleek lever, a classic round knob, or a smart deadbolt with high-tech features, your choices in door hardware contribute to both design and day-to-day comfort.
At Royalty Custom Homes, we recommend trusted brands like Schlage and Kwikset, known for their quality, durability, and stylish versatility. Schlage is renowned for its security-focused design and premium finishes, while Kwikset offers user-friendly features like SmartKey technology for easy rekeying.
Function Meets Style: Types of Door Hardware
Not all doors serve the same purpose—and not all hardware should either. Here's how we typically approach hardware types throughout your home:
Passage (non-locking): Used for closets, hallways, and pantries
Privacy (locking): Ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms, and offices
Keyed Entry (with lock and key): Installed on exterior doors for security
Deadbolts: Paired with keyed knobs or levers for added exterior protection
Your Customer Selection Coordinator will provide a detailed door hardware layout tailored to your home. If you'd like to switch up the type or placement of hardware, we can easily accommodate—just let us know!
Do My Hinges Have to Match My Doorknobs?
Not at all! While matching finishes is common for a streamlined look, it’s perfectly okay to mix metals if that better suits your style. Go with what feels right for you—there are no rules here.
Thinking About a Smart Deadbolt?
Smart deadbolts are an excellent option for added convenience and control. You’re welcome to supply your own smart lock (just make sure it arrives before carpentry finals) or we can order one for you as an upgrade. If the standard deadbolt hasn’t been ordered yet, you’ll even receive a $40 credit for opting out.
Just double-check that your selected smart lock is compatible with a 2 3/8" or 2 3/4" backset. Not sure what that means? Your Customer Selection Coordinator will be happy to help!
Style Spotlight: Knobs vs. Levers
Doorknobs offer a traditional, rounded design that works well in classic or transitional homes. They require a twist to open and suit a wide variety of aesthetics.
Levers provide a more contemporary look and are especially convenient for accessibility—they open with a simple push or pull motion.
Both options are available in multiple styles and finishes.
Don’t Forget the Deadbolts
When it comes to deadbolts, form and function go hand in hand. Whether you opt for a mechanical deadbolt or a smart one with keyless entry, the right choice boosts both security and curb appeal. Schlage and Kwikset offer multiple deadbolt styles to suit your needs, all with durable construction and thoughtful design.
Pocket Door Locks: Small, Sleek, Secure
Pocket door locks are perfect for sliding doors and come in two types:
Passage (non-locking): Great for closets and utility areas
Privacy (locking): Ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms
We recommend Kwikset pocket door locks, available in both round and square designs. Like other hardware, they come in several finish options to match your home’s look.
